The Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) is an institution for scientific cooperation of seven Catalan frontier research centres to promote multidisciplinary work, increase the scientific and societal impact of research and intensify the training of research talent.

The centers that make up the BIST Community are the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ), the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), the Institute of High Energy Physics (IFAE), and the Institute for Research in Biomedicine Barcelona (IRB Barcelona).

BIST will establish a new reference space for multidisciplinary scientific research in precision medicine, bringing together research groups from five of the seven BIST community centres.

At the Antic Mercat del Peix, BIST will construct a new building dedicated to multidisciplinary frontier research in precision medicine. The building will house groups from five research centres of the BIST community (IRB Barcelona, IBEC, ICN2, CRG, and ICFO), totalling approximately 900 individuals, fostering synergies between different expertise and technologies with the ultimate goal of contributing to improving human health.

The new BIST space will drive close collaboration among leading researchers in diverse fields such as genetics and molecular biology, biocompatible materials, nanoscience, artificial intelligence, and photonics. Together, they will address the global challenge of developing tools for precision medicine, to:

  • develop new and more accurate diagnostic tools
  • discover new, safer and more effective personalized treatments
  • understand the keys for healthy aging

From here, collaboration with the best Catalan hospitals will be established to promote the translation of advanced knowledge into medical practice.

The BIST building at the Antic Mercat del Peix area will enhance the existing potential of the biomedical hub on Barcelona's waterfront (which also includes the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park [PRBB], the Hospital del Mar, and the Pasqual Maragall Foundation), becoming one of the most significant biomedical research poles in Southern Europe.
